towns, Take Tuesday & Wednesday To Do:
Watch the video
Play the Seal Game
Play the Maine Trivia Game
Do the Seal Activity

Intro- Today there is a video from the State of Maine Historical Society reviewing with us the State of Maine seal. A seal is usually a round crest like area filled with images and details that represent something. The video describes what images and details are in the State of Maine Seal. Every state has a seal that shows things that represent that state. Some schools have seals, businesses, countries, and sports teams. Families sometimes even have seals that show family history and details. My favorite part of the Maine Seal is the North Star. A seal can help to understand a place a little better. Do the activities below to better understand Maine's seal and the state we live in.

Watch the video and take 5-10 notes about Maine and it's seal.
State of Maine Seal Explained
Play the two games below and let me know what your result was.

Make Your Own Seal
As the video suggested list what you think are the 6 things that best show what Maine is all about. For the Prize Question also add to your list of 6 Mr W's favorite part of the Maine Seal. The 6 things could have something to do with our geography or industries/businesses or food, or wildlife or Maine culture. Use your list of 6 things to create a new more modern seal for the state of Maine and share that with me if you are able to. Make it as best as you can in case I decide to send it to the Maine Historical Society like the video suggested. Have fun with the activity.
Read the following pages in the button links below. Take 5-7 notes and answer the questions.

4- Describe new businesses to Maine at this time.
5- What two MT's have been focused on in this work?

Intro-
Where we've gotten to. We have studies how people arrived in the Americas and made their way to Maine. There were the explorers to Maine and early immigrants. We have studied the early industries of Maine and being a colony of Massachusetts. We've learned about Maine's efforts to become it's own state and of heroes from Maine's early History. Who can forget the Aroostook County War! We have learned alot about Maine's geography and it's part in the Civil War. Over the next few weeks we will learn more about our states government, immigration to Maine, and it's economy.
I will also introduce for the final few weeks a prize opportunity. Every few days I will include a detail in the intro or in your feedback to help you get into a prize drawing. All the winners of the Mr W prizes(and you know how good they are) will be able to visit my room in the new building to choose a prize or prizes. A detail for today is that Remy is Mr W's new dogs is name. Today you will play the Kahoot and the Geo games. The Kahoot is on the vocab list I linked earlier in the week. We are competing against Dr Nicky's class so don't let me down!!!
Play the Kahoot. Only play twice and be sure to use an obvious version of your name so I can give you credit. Please let me know if you have problems with playing. Game is only open for today.

Hi Team! Todays work is from Pages 168-169 in the book.If you actually have your book you might prefer to use that. Otherwise I have pics of those pages below. Use those pages to take 10 or more notes on James G Blaine and migration out of Maine after the Civil War. Also ask one curiosity question you have with your work today. Maine was important enough that the Governors mansion in Maine is named after him. The governors mansion is the home of the governor when they are in Augusta. Your notes should show why Blaine was important and why people were moving out of Maine.

Maine and the Civil War Kahoot

The Civil War ends and as you know Maine plays a big part in that conflict with all the soldiers from Maine that volunteered and heroes like Joshua Chamberlain. Chamberlain is so highly respected by everyone that he is given the important job of receiving the Confederate armies arms(weapons) as they surrender. He shows great respect to the hard fighting Confederate men by ordering his troops to salute them as they marched by. The Confederates are defeated and that would finally lead to the end of slavery in America. Another hero from Maine was a man named General Oliver Otis Howard. Guess where Oliver went to school?? Yup, in your very own Monmouth Middle School. Which of course at that time was the Academy. Read the two short readings linked below. Take 5-7 notes from each reading to learn more about Howard. Kahoot tomorrow on the reading!

Take till Wednesday to finish the following work.
Use the tab link below to read about one man's appreciation of the beauty of Maine. Take 5-10 notes on his experience and views about Maine. Then do the activity below that.
A Big Fan of Maine's Geography
2. Today, read about Henry David Thoreau (page 132 in textbook. I have also provided that page in the link above if you don't have your book).
Think about a place in Maine's Nature that you love (by a river, on a mountain, in the woods, by the sea). Describe that place and say why you love it. Perhaps include a photo like I have. I'd love to share them with the class if you give permission.
Dr. Nicky and Mr Westberry's Favourite Places
One of my favorite places is called Cathedral Cove in New Zealand. It takes about 40 minutes to walk to it along a winding path. This makes it even more special as it takes effort to get there. You walk down about 100 steps onto a white sand beach and immediately hear the waves and smell the salty air. The sea has eroded the rock over millenia, creating a huge hole that you can walk through. As you enter the hole, it feels like you're in an enormous church (like a cathedral) as your voice echoes back and you stare up into the soaring ceiling. This place can be very busy in summer, but at other times, it is a peaceful, special place. I walk the beach and then find a quiet spot to stare out at the ocean and relax by the clear, blue waves.

Two short activities for Fab Friday. Watch the first video and list 10 things that you see or hear in the video that represent Maine. Then do the Kahoot. It's a competition against Dr Nicky's class so do your best! Only attempt it once so that it is fair. Include your cahoot score with your list of 10 things. I see Fred Jones is number 1 already! Let's have someone beat him!

The Band- Ghost of Paul Revere- The 20th Maine

Take Thursday & Friday to finish this work.
We've spent some time reviewing Joshua Chamberlain and Maine's proud involvement in the Civil War and the fight to get rid of slavery. Compared to it's population Maine sent more people to fight against slavery and had more casualties than any of the other Union/Northern states in the war. Many Mainers performed heroically and played a big part in the war effort. None more than Joshua Chamberlain and his army unit the 20th Maine Regiment. Today and tomorrow we will finish our study of Chamberlain. Use the two battle videos below and our past studies to answer the following questions. Before these two scenes the confederates have charged at Chamberlain's position several times and the battle has been going on for some time. The scenes are of battles but are not that realistic. You may like to ask your families if it is ok to watch or they could watch them with you.
1- From our studies does Maine fight for the Union Army or the Confederate Army?
2- What issue is the war being fought over?
3- What kind of state did Maine join the Union as when we joined the country along with Missouri?
4- In the videos what side seems to have the advantage in battle and why?
5- What battle are the videos showing us?
6- What makes the battle difficult for Chamberlain and the Northern/Union troops?
7- What makes it hard for the Southern Confederate troops?
8- In Part 5 how do Chamberlains troops react to the order of using bayonets?
9- What are 2-3 leadership qualities that Chamberlain shows at this battle?
10- Ask one curiosity question you have about this material.

Today in History 15 April

Have this work done by Tuesday:
Joshua Chamberlain fought in many battles in the Civil War as he became a hero. The most famous battle he fought in was the biggest battle of the war, Gettysburg. Maine and the rest of the Northern armies are not doing so well and could lose the war. In the Northern armies there are many units(groups) of Maine soldiers. Chamberlain is in charge of a famous group called The 20th Maine Regiment. Watch the short videos and answer the questions.
Tuesday I'll post two videos of the Battle. The videos will show some shooting and battle scenes so if you need to check with your parents that it is ok to watch.

1- Chamberlain has been given a bunch of soldiers who are now what? Hint- it starts with the letter P
2- What is Chamberlain told he can do with these troops if they don't cooperate?
3- How many men did Chamberlains group start with? How many did they have at the time of this scene?
4- What are some reasons why he says people have fought in History?
5- What does he say people are fighting the Civil War for?
6- He thinks if they lose this battle what will happen?
Chamberlain's Pre Battle Speech 4 Minutes
The animation below describes how the 20th Maine became heroes.

I remember the sea-fight far away,
How it thundered o'er the tide!

Where they in battle died.

Goes through me with a thrill:
